project winter tire

Post by Suomipoika » 25 Oct 2012, 15:47

Hello guys.
I bet that in nort Sweden living guys do need some grip to they tires, and there is two way to get it.
One is kold kutters, easy to install but they weight quit a lot.
Second bit more job to do, is metal sheet screws, amazing grip and cheap to do.
Here is how i did mine.

My tires were hostile mxt, but you can use also hostile mx and minipin tires and proline bowtie tires, well, these i have used.
First you need to drill hole on the tire, 4mm drill is good.

And DO drill the hole center of the knob..
Turn the tire up side donwn ,and start to drill the metal sheet screws in to the tire, with those holes you did drilled just before.

Be gently, low rpms.

I used 13mm metal sheet screws.

In front in the middle i used only one and second know gets the screw.
On the rear, i used all the knobs, so there is in every know this very sharp screw.

And do remember, on the front tires do it as zigzag

Forget those koldkutters, this is how it should be done, and it is cheaper too..;)

Those screws are not hard enough....
I made the same but with the drill-tip screws because they are hardened but even those were way to soft to last.....
U will get great grip for a short time ;)
Unfortunatly, the only thing that works is 4wd.
On pure ice, a Baja is almost useless even with spikes.
On packed snow it works great !
But Koldkutters works fine on packed snow also.... ;)

You might be right on that Dave.
I had kold kutter last winter, so i decided to try this kind tires now, and if they work well, i keep them and if not i just need to order new set of kold kutters, just sold my new pack of 5/8" pack.. :D
Well, ddm shipped them quite fast if i need to order new package, but those 1/2" long screws were out of stock.
Here is a film of Finnish guy driving on ice with baja, same kind tires he uses as i did..

As long as you can keep it on pure ice and snow, they might last some liters, but I´m very interested in how it works for you......
I want new ice racing tyres for my Nutech later on...... ;)

Try to not driving these tires anywhere else but on ice, or they wont we sharp anymore..
What kind nutech you got?
4wd model??
My brother changed his baja to a mcd rrv4 and it is amazing car to drive, but bashing baja is numero uno..
